Roald Dahl is one of the most beloved authors of twentieth-century children’s literature. With his irreverent humour, inventive use of language and ability to see the world from a child’s perspective, he created stories and characters that have become part of the imagination of generations of readers, from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Matilda, from The BFG to The Witches.
Quentin Blake, one of Britain’s best-known contemporary illustrators, played a decisive role in giving this universe its visual identity. His quick, witty and seemingly spontaneous line has become inseparable from Dahl’s writing, creating a dialogue between words and images that has accompanied some of his most celebrated books.
THE OPENING
Alongside representatives of the organising and supporting institutions, the opening is expected to be attended by Emma Bedlow, Interim Director of the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre; Will Phillips, Head of Collections at the Roald Dahl Museum and Story Centre; and Leigh Holmwood, Head of Communications at the Roald Dahl Story Company.
Following the institutional greetings and official speeches, the opening of the exhibition will be marked by a special event: the cutting of a 60-metre-long, 200-kilogram chocolate bar, specially made for the occasion in collaboration with Confartigianato Cuneo and Amici del Cioccolato, as a tribute to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one of Roald Dahl’s best-known books, first published in 1964 and reillustrated by Quentin Blake in 1995.
The chocolate, which will be distributed among those attending, will symbolically mark the opening of the exhibition to the public.
